The developer and marketer of painting software for creators, Clip Studio Paint (Celsys,Inc.), conducted a survey of 10,000 creators* in four European countries (the UK, France, Germany, and Spain) in December 2020 regarding how they go about creating visual content. The survey was conducted in the form of an online questionnaire and received responses from approximately 10,000 people across the countries: 1,000 teenage respondents and 500 respondents from each decade age group from 20s to 40s.
The results of the survey showed that 73% of creators answered that they use some form of subscription service, be that through monthly payments or otherwise, indicating that uptake of subscription services by creators is widespread. The most common subscription service used was PC software (not including games) at 46%, followed by smartphone apps (not including games) at 37%, and video streaming services at 24%.
Taking a look at the differences between the countries, subscription usage was highest in the UK (82%) and Germany (81%), with Spain (66%) and France (61%) trailing behind in adoption.
31% of creators who answered that they are users, or would like to use creative software on a subscription basis raised that having access to the latest version was a benefit, followed by having access extra services on top of the one-time purchase version of the same service as a motivation for choosing subscription services. This shows the progressiveness of creators who have a constant desire to use the latest software and services.

This survey was conducted online by MADE IN SURVEYS (France, https://en.misgroup.io/) between October 10 - December 18, 2020, with a total of 10,555 respondents in four countries: the UK, France, Germany, and Spain.
Breakdown of Respondents:
UK: 2,545 respondents total (13-19: 1,035; 20-29: 485; 30-39: 520, 40-49: 505)
France: 2,676 respondents total (13-19: 1,096; 20-29: 530; 30-39: 532; 40-49: 518)
Germany: 2,627 respondents total (13-19: 1,080; 20-29: 526; 30-39: 517; 40-49: 497)
Spain: 2,707 respondents total (13-19: 1,076; 20-29: 536; 30-39: 502; 40-49: 593)
The totals differ slightly so that the number of people in each generation were proportionally distributed.
